An ionic bond is formed by a electrostatic attraction between to oppositely charged ions mainly between a metal and non metal eg Sodium Chloride, Sodium being posititve and chlorine being negative

Ionic compounds have the following physical properties:

  • They are crystalline solids with high melting points
  • They conduct electricity in aqueous solution or when they are molten
  • They are hard and britlle with crystals that cleave easily
  • They are often soluble in water
